Fairmont Community Flood Study

Ciorba Group was selected by the Will County Land Use Department to analyze and determine the cause of an existing neighborhood flooding problem and to develop a recommended approach to alleviate the flooding. The lack of stormwater conveyance and detention capacity is a significant component of the flooding problems being experienced in the subdivision. The subdivision is in a low-lying area draining to an unnamed, unstudied Zone A floodplain, which flows to the Illinois & Michigan Canal and ultimately to the Des Plaines River. The flow is also restricted at several crossing points that create backed up conveyance conditions in the study area. XP-SWMM was used to model the neighborhood’s stormwater management system. A combination of grey and green infrastructure improvements were analyzed and recommended. Study findings and recommendations were summarized in a feasibility report
