Ciorba Group was responsible for the preparation of conceptual studies, and preliminary and final design plans for the replacement of two seven-span 530-foot long PPC bridges in Winnebago/Boone County. The new bridges are two four-span weathering steel plate structures that at 550 feet are the longest integral abutment bridges in Illinois. The new layout guarantees a larger waterway opening. The project included bridge widening and reconstruction of roadway pavement, shoulders and embankments, design of temporary causeways and cofferdams for the construction of wall piers in the river and new drainage structures including detention facilities. The eastbound bridge was instrumented to monitor deflections and behavior as part of a joint research project of the Tollway, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the University of Illinois on integral abutment bridges.
